I happened to watch this movie yesterday and felt it is worth sharing a word or two to those sci-fi film enthusiasts who are bored with Terminator kinda action sci-fi movies. Well, here’s a film made in england by british director Danny Boyle, peeking beyond the future of our motherly planet and her soulmate around which she revolves, the SUN. This film, Sunshine was released in the UK and worldwide in 2007 and grossed about $ 35 million, a little less than the production cost of $ 40 million.

What is peculiar about the movie is that the way the director wished to portray the apocalypse of the dying star, our sun in a scientific as well as philosophical tones. The plot is based on the scientific theory that our Sun, a star that is burning out Hydrogen and producing Helium in a process called Nuclear Fusion is sooner or later have to run out of its fuel to shutdown its nuclear furnace thus causing Earth to face an eternal solar winter that deprives all life existing in the planet.

So there’s the crew of seven on the spaceship named ICARUS-II, having all the nuclear fissile payload about the size of manhattan, mined to extinction on earth. The crew’s mission is to sail past the galactic distances towards the sun and drop the payload to re-ignite the Stellar furnace again to glory. Sounds way too weird for a science ? May be, but the film’s sound VFX and background score takes us on a unbelievable voyage towards teh sun a thrilling experience. The design of the spaceship with gold-laden heat shields, the interior and the most fascinating ‘Observation room’ make a stunning artwork by the film crew. To know why the ‘observation room’ is fascinating, one needs to see the movie to understand it !

The protagonist of the film ‘Capa’, is played by noted actor Cilian Murphy. Some well known chinese actors in hollywood like Michelle Yeoh, Hiroyuki Sanada and Benedict Wong also have taken meaty roles as crew of the mission. As theory goes, more the number- more the collision, there are mission plans changes and conflicts between the crew members that jeopardizes the mission and the space craft.
